Two days of Cotswold and Herefordshire vineyards

Spend a Friday in the southern Cotswolds around Stroud and Cirencester, then cross into the Herefordshire borders for a Saturday of vineyards around Ledbury and Newent. The days are set by when each vineyard opens, so the order matters.

The trip at a glance

  • How long: Two days (Friday and Saturday)
  • Best time: Late March to early October, when Coddington and 1276 Wines are open and Woodchester Valley runs its fullest tour programme.
  • Where to base yourself: Spend the first night in Cirencester or Stroud and the second around Ledbury, or stay at one of the vineyards that has rooms or cottages.
  • Getting there: By car, Cirencester and Stroud are reached from the M4 and M5, and Ledbury is about an hour and a quarter from Cirencester via Gloucester. Stroud and Kemble (for Cirencester) have direct trains from London Paddington, and Ledbury has a station on the Worcester to Hereford line. The vineyards themselves need a car or taxi, and a driver who is not tasting.

Opening days and prices checked on each vineyard’s own website in October 2026. See every Cotswolds and West Midlands vineyard for more.

Day 1 (Friday): Cirencester and the Stroud valleys

Start with a glass at a small estate east of Cirencester, then head west to Woodchester for a tour with lunch.

Morning

Poulton Hill Estate

The cellar door at Poulton opens Tuesday to Friday, 9am to 4pm, and Saturday, 11am to 3pm, with the estate’s wines by the glass and to buy, no booking needed. From June to mid September a 90-minute tour and tasting runs at 11am (£30), and from October to May a winter tasting (£20) runs on set dates; both are booked online and are for over-18s. No dogs other than guide dogs.

No need to book

Lunchtime and afternoon

Woodchester Valley Vineyard

Tours at the vineyard on Convent Lane are pre-booked only, with no drop-ins. On Fridays from April to October book the Classic Tour and Tasting with grazing lunch (£50, or £30 without lunch), or the Premium Tour and Tasting (£40); start times are shown when you book. Tours are for over-18s, and the cellar door shop on the Bath Road at Inchbrook opens Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm.

Book ahead

Food: The grazing lunch hamper with a glass of wine on Woodchester Valley’s Friday tour; otherwise eat in Cirencester before you leave.

Getting between them: About 40 minutes from Poulton to Woodchester, and about 15 minutes from Cirencester to Poulton.

Day 2 (Saturday): Ledbury and Newent

Three vineyards within about 20 minutes of each other on the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire border, with lunch among the vines at Three Choirs. Keep tastings small, as this is a full day.

Late morning

Coddington Vineyard

Coddington’s 1750s wine cellar opens for tastings on Fridays and Saturdays, 11am to 3pm, from late March to early October; book through its website. The shop opens the same days, and the garden is part of the visit. It is closed for winter and reopens on 26 March 2027.

Lunch

Three Choirs Vineyard

At weekends, non-residents can book the self-guided tasting and lunch, 12pm to 2pm: five still and sparkling wines of your choice with small plates and sharing boards, and a walk on the vineyard trail, from £45 a head with a £25 minimum food spend, for up to six people. Pre-booking is essential, online or on 01531 890223.

Book ahead

Afternoon

1276 Wines

The two-hour hosted tour and tasting (£30) runs at 2pm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays: a walk through the vineyard and the winery, then a tasting with local cheeses and chocolates. Book online and give at least 24 hours’ notice to change; there are stairs to the tasting room and dogs can go only in the vineyard. Tours run to the end of October and reopen in March.

Book ahead

Food: Lunch is the tasting and small plates at Three Choirs; the brasserie also serves weekend lunch from 12pm to 2pm, booked ahead. Ledbury has plenty of pubs and restaurants for the evening.

Getting between them: About 25 minutes from Coddington to Three Choirs, then about 20 minutes from Three Choirs to 1276 Wines on the Little Marcle Road outside Ledbury.

In winter

Coddington closes until 26 March 2027 and 1276 Wines pauses tours from November until March, so in winter focus on the Cotswold side. Woodchester Valley runs fewer tours, including Friday 11am tours with an optional fish and chips lunch from November and dog-walk tours on set Sundays, and its cellar door shop stays open; Poulton Hill holds winter tastings (£20) on set dates. Three Choirs keeps its weekend tasting lunches and restaurant.

Tips

  • Go on a Friday and Saturday: Coddington opens only on those days, and Three Choirs’ non-resident tasting lunch runs only at weekends.
  • Everything on Day 2 needs booking, so reserve Coddington, Three Choirs and 1276 Wines together before you set off.
  • Woodchester Valley’s tours start at the vineyard on Convent Lane, not at the cellar door shop on the Bath Road.
  • Three tastings on Day 2 is a lot: share flights, use the spittoons and make sure the driver is not tasting.
  • Over-18s only for tours and tastings at Poulton Hill, Woodchester Valley and 1276 Wines.
