Vineyards of the south Devon and west Dorset coast

This route follows the coast east from Budleigh Salterton in Devon to the Bride Valley in west Dorset, with four wine stops that open on Fridays and Saturdays. Plan it for a Friday and Saturday between May and September, when every tour is running.

The trip at a glance

  • How long: Two days (Friday and Saturday)
  • Best time: May to September, when Lily Farm’s tours run; Bride Valley’s Saturday tours run from mid April until harvest and Furleigh’s from Easter to the end of October.
  • Where to base yourself: Lyme Regis or Charmouth sits between the two days, about 50 minutes from Budleigh Salterton and 30 minutes from the Bride Valley. Bridport or West Bay is closer for Day 2.
  • Getting there: By car, the A35 links Axminster, Bridport and Dorchester, and the A3052 runs along the East Devon coast towards Budleigh Salterton. By train, Axminster is on the line from London Waterloo to Exeter, about 3 miles from Lyme Bay Winery, and Exmouth is about 5 miles from Budleigh Salterton. Bride Valley and Furleigh are in the lanes behind Bridport, which has no station, so you will need a car or taxi.

Opening days and prices checked on each vineyard’s own website in October 2026. See every Devon vineyard for more.

Day 1 (Friday): East Devon

Start with a small family vineyard above Budleigh Salterton, then head east to Lyme Bay Winery near Axminster. Both open on Fridays.

Morning (11am)

Lily Farm Vineyard

The owner-led tour of about 90 minutes ends with four still wines, at 11am on Fridays and Saturdays from May to September, £18 a head with at least two people per booking. Book online, arrive ten minutes early, and cancel at least 24 hours ahead for a refund. Tastings are for over-18s, no dogs except assistance dogs, and the slope may not suit anyone with limited mobility.

Afternoon

Lyme Bay Winery

A working winery rather than a vineyard, with no vines to walk through, making English wine alongside mead, fruit wines and liqueurs. The cellar door opens Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4.30pm, closed 12.30pm to 1.15pm, so arrive after lunch to browse and buy. The Gold Guided Tasting of seven drinks with nibbles (£35, about two and a half hours, usually Fridays and Saturdays at 1.30pm) must be booked by email or phone, and is better saved for another day than squeezed in after Lily Farm.

No need to book

Buy the Brut Reserve, £29.95

Food: The Salterton Arms on Chapel Street in Budleigh Salterton serves lunch on Fridays from noon to 2.30pm, a few minutes’ drive from Lily Farm.

Getting between them: About 20 miles and 40 minutes from Lily Farm to Lyme Bay Winery, then about 25 minutes on to Lyme Regis.

Day 2 (Saturday): The Bride Valley and Bridport

Two west Dorset vineyards a short drive apart, with a pub lunch in between. Bride Valley only opens for its Saturday morning tour, so this day has to be a Saturday.

Morning (10.30am)

Bride Valley Vineyard

The tour starts at 10.30am on Saturdays from mid April until harvest: a walk through part of the ten-hectare vineyard, then a tasting of still and sparkling wines, about two hours for £25. Places are limited to 16 and tours sell out, so book well ahead. Meet at the Tasting Tent, wear shoes for muddy ground, and keep dogs on leads as there is livestock.

Afternoon (2.30pm)

Furleigh Estate

The Grand Tour of the vineyard and winery ends with a seated tasting of three still and two sparkling wines, at 11am and 2.30pm Thursday to Saturday from Easter to October, about two hours, £30, booked ahead and for over-18s only. Drivers can take the same tour with five local juices instead of wine. If you would rather not tour, a drop-in tasting of three wines is £10 for groups under six, last tasting at 4pm, and the cellar door opens on Saturdays from May to October.

Food: The White Horse in Litton Cheney, a Palmers pub a few minutes from Bride Valley, serves lunch on Saturdays from noon to 2.30pm and is dog friendly.

Getting between them: About 25 miles and 40 minutes from Lyme Regis to Bride Valley, then about 9 miles and 20 to 25 minutes via Bridport to Furleigh.

In winter

From November to March the tours here stop, but Furleigh’s drop-in tastings (£10) carry on during cellar door hours, Monday to Friday, and Lyme Bay Winery’s cellar door stays open Monday to Saturday. That makes a winter Friday at both, with a walk on the coast at Lyme Regis or West Bay in between, a fair alternative.

Tips

  • Book Bride Valley first: it runs one tour a week, on Saturday mornings, for up to 16 people, and sells out.
  • Lyme Bay Winery closes from 12.30pm to 1.15pm and all day on Sundays, so time your arrival around lunch.
  • Lily Farm and Furleigh’s tours are for adults; Furleigh’s is over-18s only, and Lily Farm’s tastings are 18+.
  • Dogs: welcome on leads at Bride Valley and on Furleigh’s tours (not in the winery), but not at Lily Farm.
  • Furleigh’s Driver’s Tour, with juices instead of wine, is a fair deal for whoever has the car keys.

Where to stay

Castlewood Vineyard at Musbury, near Axminster, lets holiday cottages on the vineyard, and the White Horse in Litton Cheney has three en-suite rooms a few minutes from Bride Valley. Otherwise look in Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Bridport and West Bay, or Budleigh Salterton if you want to start Day 1 close by.
