About Halfpenny Green

Martin Vickers, a farmer, planted the first half acre in 1983 with the aim of growing vines to rival continental sites. By 1991 another 22 acres had gone in, and the vineyard now covers almost 30 acres of sheltered, south-facing slopes about 250ft above sea level, on light, sandy, free-draining soil.

His son Clive is the owner and head winemaker, and Clive’s wife Lisa runs the shop, restaurant and tea rooms. The winery was built in 2005. It turns out 50,000 to 60,000 bottles of Halfpenny Green’s own wine a year, all from grapes grown on the estate, and makes and bottles wine for more than 80 other vineyards in England and Wales. Each autumn it also runs a co-operative scheme for people with a vine in the garden or on an allotment, pooling their grapes into a shared tank.

The estate is a member of the Sustainable Wines of Great Britain scheme, and its wines are sold in farm shops and delis around the region as well as on site.

The wines

There is a long list, all from the estate’s own grapes, and prices are low for English wine. Penny Black is the house white, a medium-dry blend that includes grapes from the original vines, at £12.50. The Classic Cuvée 2018, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the 2018 harvest that spent over five years on lees, is the most serious bottle at £28.95, and it is the one we’d buy. The sparkling red, made from Rondo and Pinot Noir at £25.95, is the curiosity. The rest of the range takes in a Bacchus, the Long Acre blend, an oak-aged Chardonnay, a Pinot Noir, Black Country Gold, an English rosé, Penny Red, and Brut and rosé sparklings. There are discounts on 3, 6 and 12 bottles, mixed or not, and half bottles that are only sold in the shop. Where to buy them.

Tours and tastings at Halfpenny Green

This is a day-out sort of place rather than a quiet cellar door. Besides the vineyard there is a farm shop and deli, a restaurant and tea rooms, a craft village of independent businesses, WILD Zoological Park and coarse fishing pools, so it gets busy at weekends. The shop and restaurant need no booking, though the restaurant recommends it. The Wine Loft tasting is the one to book if you can’t make a tour date, since it runs every day. For a guided tour, the dates for each year go up on the website and fill up through the summer, so we’d book as soon as they appear. The traditional high tea is £26.95 a head, served until 3pm, and needs 24 hours’ notice and a £10 deposit per person. The phone line has options: 1 for the restaurant, 2 for the shop (tastings, vouchers and wine orders), or hold for tours.
