Visiting Trevibban Mill
Trevibban Mill is a vineyard and organic orchard just inland from Padstow, planted in 2008 by Engin and Liz Mumcuoglu and named after a ruined watermill on the land. It makes still and sparkling wine and a lot of cider. Book the 3pm guided tour, which an owner or one of the family usually leads, or drop in for a tasting at the terrace bar.

About Trevibban Mill
In 2007 Engin and Liz Mumcuoglu looked round six and a half acres at Trevibban, near Padstow, including the ruin of an 18th-century watermill where a miller and his family had once lived.
They bought it, then the fields next door. Engin planted the vineyard on the sloping middle fields in 2008, and between 2010 and 2012 they added 1,700 apple trees, sweet chestnuts and other fruit.
Most of the land and the winery are certified organic by the Soil Association. The organic logo goes on all of the ciders and some of the wines.
Southdown sheep graze between the vines and under the apple trees, and a wildflower garden is sown every year. The winemaker, Juri, has worked in wineries around the world for more than ten years.
The range is long for a vineyard of this size, with ten grape varieties going into sparkling, white, rosé and red wines, plus still and sparkling ciders, apple wines and juice. The red Cicero is named after the farm’s guard dog.
The wines
Start with the sparkling. The Blanc de Noirs is the most expensive bottle, and Black Ewe Pink is the cheaper way into the fizz.
Among the still wines, Constantine is an organic oaked Chardonnay, and Dark Lane Reserve is a red that spent 72 months in oak, with only 324 bottles made. Cicero is the everyday red.
Don’t skip the ciders: there are pét-nat sparkling ciders in pink and white, still ciders and apple wines, and the organic apple juice is a good choice for the driver. Where to buy them.
Tours and tastings at Trevibban Mill
We’d book the guided tour. It is led by the family more often than not, it goes out into the vines and the winery, and the tasting at the end is in the same room as the bar, so you can stay on.
If you want lunch first, arrive between 1pm and 1.30pm and say so in the booking. The tasting is the easier option on a short visit, and in winter you can usually just walk in.
Days matter here. The bar shuts on Sundays and Mondays all year and opens only Thursday to Saturday in winter, and it closes for private functions on some dates, which are listed on the contact page.
Part of the tour is outside and can be muddy, so bring boots and a coat. Don’t wander into the vines on your own, as it is a working farm.

Getting there
The vineyard is on Dark Lane, just outside Padstow. The website gives a map link and a list of local taxis but no bus or train details, so drive or take a taxi from Padstow. If you are tasting, book the taxi back.
Make a day of it
Padstow, for the harbour and the fish restaurants, is the obvious place to pair with a visit. Barnaby’s, the restaurant downstairs at the vineyard, saves you the trip if you want a proper lunch.
