Visiting Holmfirth Vineyard
Holmfirth Vineyard grows grapes on a steep hillside above Holmbridge in the Holme Valley, and it runs a restaurant and apartments as well as the vineyard tour. Book the tour, then stay for lunch or afternoon tea with the view. Check the private event dates first, because on those days it closes to the public after 10.30am.

About Holmfirth
The vineyard is on Woodhouse Lane, above Holmbridge at the head of the Holme Valley. It covers about seven acres of steep slopes, around 7,000 vines planted by hand by the couple who bought the land, with views out over the hills of the Peak District. In 2009 it appeared on the Channel 5 programme Build a New Life.
Growing grapes this high in the Pennines means choosing varieties bred for a cool, short season. The wines on sale here are made from Solaris for white and from Rondo and Regent for rosé and red. Over the years the place has grown into a restaurant with a conservatory and terrace, apartments, and a wedding and events venue alongside the vines.
The wines
Solaris is the white to try, a grape bred for cool climates that ripens even this far north. Rondo makes the dry rosé, and there’s a Rondo and Regent red, as well as a sparkling Rondo rosé from 2023, the most expensive bottle in the shop. Where to buy them.
Tours and tastings at Holmfirth
The view is the draw. The Tasting Lounge, conservatory and terrace look across the Holme Valley, so the restaurant works even when the weather is poor. The thing to watch is the calendar of private events. On dozens of dates between March and November the vineyard closes to the public after 10.30am, which rules out a tour or lunch, so look at the opening hours page before you plan a trip. The tour goes out onto steep ground, so wear sensible shoes.

Buy Holmfirth wines
None of our wine partners has these wines in stock this week. The vineyard sells them in its own shop, or see our pick of English wines to buy online.
Getting there
The vineyard is on Woodhouse Lane at Holmbridge, just up the valley from Holmfirth town. Its website does not give public transport details, so it’s best to drive or take a taxi from Holmfirth or Huddersfield. If you are tasting, book the taxi back.
Make a day of it
Holmfirth, the town made famous by Last of the Summer Wine, is a few minutes down the valley. The open moorland of the Peak District starts just above. Helme Edge Vineyard, near Meltham, is the other vineyard close by and also offers tours and tastings.
