About this tour

A guided tour at Hambledon in Hampshire, planted in 1952 and described by the estate as England's oldest commercial vineyard. You walk the vines, see the gravity-fed winery and go down into cellars cut into the chalk, then taste three Hambledon sparkling wines in the Tasting Room. Allow about an hour and a half.

Seeing the cellars is the highlight, and you can book lunch in the estate restaurant to follow on.

Hambledon pauses the tour during the October harvest and runs a seated tasting instead. The route has uneven ground and two spiral staircases, so it does not suit anyone with limited mobility. Tours are for over-18s only. The nearest station is Petersfield, about 15 minutes away by taxi.

Best for: anyone interested in the history of English wine who wants a proper look behind the scenes.

Planning your visit

Hambledon opens from Wednesday to Sunday, from 9am on weekdays and 10am at weekends. Tours must be booked ahead, while the bar and restaurant take walk-ins.

The nearest station is Petersfield, about an hour from London Waterloo. Taxis wait at the station and the drive takes about 15 minutes; book your return taxi before you go and allow two hours for the tour. By car from London, leave the A3 at Clanfield and follow the signs via the Bat and Ball pub at Broadhalfpenny Down. Parking at the vineyard is free.

The estate restaurant serves lunch from Wednesday to Sunday and dinner from Wednesday to Saturday, so lunch after a morning tour is easy to arrange. Winchester and Portsmouth are each about 30 minutes away, and Hattingley Valley near Alresford makes a good second Hampshire visit. Mill Down Cottage on the estate sleeps six if you want to stay.

Our guide to Hambledon has the history, the wines to buy and a map, and Hampshire's vineyards lists the other estates you can visit nearby.
